Surface Water
Water pollution is a growing problem and one contributor is illegal dumping. Dumping of materials leads to pollution of the stormwater drainage system that feeds our creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes- our surface water.
A common misconception is that water flowing into storm drains goes to a treatment plant to get cleaned before flowing into our streams, but this is not the case.
Stormwater runoff picks up materials such as dirt, oil, and chemicals, and carries them directly to the nearest stream, lake, or river- with no treatment whatsoever. This form of pollution is called non-point source pollution.
